I have been an ex-pat mother for over 20 years (you guessed right, I have multilingual grown-up children now). I was already an educator and a language teacher when we started our international journey. I knew I wanted my children to speak English besides our mother tongue - Portuguese. Then, with my interest in local languages, I got more ambitious and confused about all the languages my children could learn! Private Chinese tutoring, online lessons, super expensive schools, new learning apps and… Going back for a few years in our home country added to the dilemma: are the children attending a local school or an international one? I was lucky to be working closely with experienced educators, so I learned of similar challenges and a plethora of potential solutions.
That’s how I developed a framework for an effective system that helps children make the most of their international experience. That solution was based on everyone developing an understanding of the languages we use in the family. To this day we use four languages at home every day and can speak a couple of extra ones on demand.
Sounds like a great arrangement, doesn't it? And it is! Based on respect for different cultures and empowering parents and children alike. It certainly counts that this system yields the best cognitive benefits for the youngest ones!
